At Amerita, our expert Nutrition Support Team has earned ASPEN’s Clinical Nutrition Team of Distinction Award and will work with you to individualize feeding regimens for your patients and support transition to an oral diet when appropriate.
We all need food to live. But sometimes when a person cannot eat, or digest and absorb food, nutrition must be given a different way.
Parenteral Nutrition bypasses normal digestion in the stomach and intestines. It provides nutrients normally found in foods as specialized nutrients delivered into the veins by an intravenous (IV) catheter. This one-time needle placement allows access into the veins. Special connections to the catheter allow IV fluids to be delivered without needles.
Enteral Nutrition is using a feeding tube to ensure you receive the essential nutrition and hydration needed for optimal health. The tube delivers EN formula directly into your stomach or small intestine when oral consumption becomes challenging or when nutrient absorption becomes difficult.
Whether you are prescribed EN or PN, both provide the nutrients you would receive from food. Both methods are designed to meet your protein, carbohydrate, and fat needs including vitamins, minerals (such as Zinc, Manganese, Selenium, and Copper) as well as fluid for hydration and electrolytes.
